Alberto to Bring Rain, Flooding to United States

Subtropical Storm Alberto, the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, has formed near the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.

The storm is given a subtropical designation because it hasn’t fully attained tropical characteristics. As the storm continues to develop it likely will become fully tropical. The impacts will be the same regardless of when that transition happens, however.

Those impacts will mainly come in the form of heavy rain and flooding for parts of the southeastern United States over the weekend, and even into early next week.

At this point, we are not expecting direct impacts in New England.

This storm forms just one day after the National Hurricane Center released its official outlook for the season.

It predicts 10-16 named storms (average is 12), with 5-9 becoming hurricanes (average is 6). Of those hurricanes the Center expects 1-4 to be major, reaching category 3 or higher (average is 3).
