Multiple tornadoes were confirmed on Cape Cod on Tuesday, with three supercell thunderstorm complexes passed Southeastern New England since Monday that produced flooding and severe weather from the mid-Atlantic states to New York to Southeastern New England, with Cape Cod getting hit hardest by more wind damage than anywhere else in our area.
The National Weather Service confirms damage consistent with the twisting and torquing of tornadoes from Yarmouth to Harwich yesterday.
The West Yarmouth tornado was very close to where we had a significant tornado many many years ago near the old Yarmouth drive-in, August 1977.
The town of Harwich had to declare a state of emergency after being so hard-hit Monday night, and then again mid-day Tuesday.
So it’s cleanup day on Cape Cod and the weather is cooperating for the most part.
Most of New England is already having a nice day with mostly clear skies and temperatures rising to the 70s with sunshine. But on Cape Cod a fourth low pressure system in two days is passing east of Nantucket this morning, with a period of rain that will end by lunchtime on Cape Cod on the Islands. Sun comes out here this afternoon.
High pressure from southeastern Canada is then in control with seasonable temperatures, and comfortably low humidity for today, tomorrow, and Friday. Temperatures today and tomorrow near 80°. By Friday we’re back into the low 80s. And this weekend mid to upper 80s with humidity increasing. There’s a little bit of instability in the atmosphere so a stray shower or sprinkle could occur today and tomorrow, and then a thunderstorm is possible in a widely scattered manner each afternoon into the weekend.
