Cold Front Triggers Thunderstorms Before Comfortable Weekend

One more round of rain, with some embedded thunder, then nice weather comes in to start our weekend.

A cold front traversing New England from northwest to the southeast has triggered a few thunderstorms, and a period of rain for southern New England this evening and overnight. Rain is likely in southern New England, but holds off until just after the Patriots game, when up to a half inch or 3/4 of an inch may fall from Connecticut to eastern Massachusetts by early tomorrow morning.

For northern New England as the thunderstorms exit this evening, followed by clearing sky with comfortable weather returning, we will see low temperature in the 60s north, but still very sticky and in the low 70s south. High pressure from Canada is going to dominate the weather the next several days.

As it arrives Friday night and Saturday, wind from the north will bring in dry air with a clear night, and a mostly sunny Saturday. Temperatures Saturday start off in the 40s and 50s, climbing to the 70s, except 60s in the hills. As the high-pressure system progresses to eastern Canada, the wind in New England will come in more from the east.

A layer of clouds may move in across southern New England Sunday, with a chance of showers. We should stay sunny in northern New England all weekend. We will see high temperatures on Sunday in the 60s in parts of southern New England near the coast, to low 70s well inland.

Warmer air will try and come back to the north Monday and Tuesday, but that warmer and more humid air will meet resistance from the big cool high-pressure system over the Canadian maritime provinces. That may mean a persistent onshore flow rain possibly developing in southern New England, perhaps even something from the tropics getting close later Tuesday and Wednesday.

The weather map certainly bears watching as we go to next week, we could have a named Tropical Cyclone off the East Coast, south of New England. Stay tuned to our First Alert 10-Day Forecast for the latest.
