FIRST ALERT: First of Two Snow Storms Spread Across Region

We have two storms in the forecast that will bring several inches of snow to New England. The first one is a coastal storm that passes southeast of Nantucket today.

The snow held off until this morning, then spread across the south coasts from south to north. By 3 a.m., the snow was in Hartford and Providence, then just approaching Boston. Temperatures were near freezing for most places, so the snow ratio was much lower, and the snow will have a heavier texture compared to our last storm.

Snow reached the Greater Boston area at about 6 a.m. this morning as a changeover to a mix of rain begins across the islands. Snow shuts off across Hartford around 9 a.m., snow continues in Boston and across Manchester, New Hampshire up through Portland, Maine. Snow to rain mix arrives to Cape Cod by 9 a.m.

Snow tapers off from west to east by Saturday afternoon. Lingering snow showers continue across the coastline through the afternoon.

Totals:

We're expecting 5-9 inches of snow Saturday morning across Boston, Worcester, Providence, to the Cape Cod Canal. Three to 5 inches of snow are expected across the Merrimack Valley and north of the Massachusetts Turnpike. We're expecting 3-5 inches across the Cape and islands due to more mixing.

Wind:

Wind gusts may be between 20 and 30 mph from the north, northeast Saturday morning across the interior. Wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph across the coast and southeastern Massachusetts may lead to some power outages or damage because of the snow weight. The consistency will be pasty and heavy, which will weigh power lines and branches down, so it won’t take much wind to create outages or damage.

TIMELINE: 2 Weekend Storms Hitting Region With Snow

Coast:

No coastal flooding is expected for the Saturday morning storm. Tides are astronomically low through next week and the wave heights are forecast to be around 10 feet offshore by Saturday night with a north, northwest wind as the low moves away.

Monday Morning Storm:

We need to get through the Saturday storm to figure out how the atmospheric pattern adjusts before locking in snow totals. We do know that this storm will have a higher travel impact and will bring plowable snow for more areas in New England. The trend is that we see rain and a mix southeast, a large swatch of a wintry mix across central New England, and heavy snow north. The track is still subject to change, so stay tuned this weekend as we iron out the details.

10-Day Outlook:

A weak shortwave may bring in scattered snow showers across New England Saturday night, between the snow storm Saturday morning and Monday morning. Sunday will be dry with temperatures nearing 40 and approaching snow. Colder temperatures return in the extended forecast.

Tuesday through Thursday our highs will be in the 20s with mostly dry weather. Friday into the weekend, a couple of waves of low-pressure pass near New England. With these waves being several days away, our confidence is low on the timing and whether or not we will see heavy snow. Stay tuned!
