FIRST ALERT: Storm Bringing Widespread Showers, Snow to Region

A warm front pushed a few of us to 60 degrees Tuesday and an isolated 1 inch of rainfall in southeastern Massachusetts is now well offshore.

Wednesday, we’ll get plenty of sunshine and cooler weather. It’s a little gap between weather systems that we have for one day in a row. Highs will be closer to 50 degrees in parts of southern New England, but most of us are in the 40s with plenty of sunshine and wind from the west slowly diminishing this afternoon.

Clouds will increase Wednesday night and low temperature will be in the 20s north and 30s south.

A wave of low pressure moves in Thursday with clouds thickening and snow developing in the mountains of northern New England in the morning. A mix of rain and snow will develop in the higher elevations of central New England by mid-day and rain will develop in southern and eastern New England during the afternoon and evening.

High temperature Thursday will be in the 30s north and 40s south.

Low pressure tracks right along Interstate 95 Thursday night. The rain/snow line should be just north of that track. That means the higher elevations of western and northern New England may get 4 to 6 inches of snow, with a quarter to half inch of rainfall possible along the coast.

This low pressure crossing New England is initially a weak system, but will intensify rapidly Thursday night and Friday, pulling in the coldest air since last winter. Precipitation should shut off for most of us early Friday with temperatures in the 30s south, 20s north, and temperatures will probably not move much.

There should be a good amount of sunshine, with the exception of upslope snow in Vermont, but wind will gust past 35 mph. This will keep the wind chill sub-freezing all day long. We are looking at a hard freeze Friday night. It’s time to pull in the garden hoses and winterize the plumbing.

We are between systems on Saturday with less wind and cold air. High temperatures will be close to 40 degrees, but it will be plenty cold in the mountains that the ski areas will make a lot of snow this weekend.

High pressure moves south of us Sunday, keeping us on the dry side with a less chilly breeze from the southwest. Temperatures will bounce back into the 40s south, 30s north.

Another cold front will pass over Sunday night with a few rain or snow showers, then clearing and colder again Monday with the temperature only near 40 degrees.

Some of the coldest air in North America is going to be over southern Ontario Tuesday. At the same time, waves of low pressure are going to come out of the southeastern United States, and there’s a pretty good chance that we end up with a wintry storm here Tuesday into Wednesday.

The rain/snow line may collapse right to the ocean before precipitation winds die down mid-week. There’s a slight chance that a precipitation may even keep on coming off and on here in our First Alert 10-Day Forecast.
