Clouds Increasing With Approaching Cold Front

Many locations went below 0 degrees again Friday morning, but at least there’s less wind to start our day. And now with the February sun in effect, we'll have a nice day for solar heating.

With partly to mostly sunny skies, our high temperatures will be close to 20 degrees central, and in the 20s south. It's still in the single numbers and teens at the ski resorts. The cold high-pressure system is going off to our south with the return flow bringing in warmer weather for the weekend.

It’s a seasonable chill Friday night with a low temperature in the teens, single numbers north with a mostly clear sky and not too much wind.

Saturday is mostly sunny in southern New England, but clouds are on the increase across the north with an approaching cold front.

Occasional light snow is possible in the mountains of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine in the afternoon. High temperatures will be in the 30s south, 20s north.

After a couple of inches of snow at the ski areas, the front should move along on Sunday with increasing sunshine. Temperatures will be similar in the 30s south and 20s north.

With more than 6 feet of snow in the mountains and considering this weather, this could be the best weekend for skiing of the entire winter in New England.

And it’s likely that Ms. G the Massachusetts groundhog, and Punxsutawney Phil will see their shadows -- meaning that winter goes on six more weeks.

However, here in much of New England, we are having a thaw next week.

Low pressure tracks to our north on Monday. With the return southwest flow, we should get back into the 40s in southern New England. Depending on the position of the front, a few spots may pass 50 degrees or better on Tuesday.

There may be another cold front with a few rain showers or a wintry mix in the mountains. It’s a really tough call Wednesday and Thursday with very cold air in southeastern Canada, and warm to record warm off to our south.

We will probably end up on the warmer side, but once again, we have to watch out for a wintry mix, before winter chill returns to all of us later Thursday and into next weekend. Stay tuned to our first alert 10-day forecast.
