‘Slow Down': Officials Concerned About Potential Flooding on Roads After Heavy Rain

Officials are asking drivers to use caution as they travel Saturday due to the potential for localized flooding on roadways

Officials are concerned about flooding on area roadways Saturday because of blinding rain and high winds.

Massachusetts State Police are urging people to use caution when driving, saying heavy rain is causing flooding in low-lying areas, which increases the risk of hydroplaning.

The Concord Fire Department reported "crazy downpours" in their area around 7:30 a.m. Saturday, saying that localized flooding has made for challenging driving conditions.

Police in Auburn issued a traffic condition alert on Twitter, saying there is a lot of standing water after heavy rain overnight that has continued into the morning.

"Slow down, two hands on wheel and stay safe," read one tweet.

Around 7:10 a.m., Auburn police said the Massachusetts Department of Transportation has responded to Route 20 near Prospect Street where a "small lake" has formed across the roadway.

Shortly after 7 a.m., State Police responded to a crash on Route 128 south, prior to exit 30B in Lexington. Officials reported that heavy rain had caused flooding in the area, and police urged drivers to use caution. Following the crash and subsequent car fire, all lanes were closed except the left lane.

Police said all lanes have since reopened but that flooding remains a problem in the Lexington area, reiterating that everyone should drive with caution.
