Wicked winds created dangerous conditions in parts of Vermont on Monday.
In some locations, especially spot on the western slopes of the Green Mountains, powerful winds took down trees, knocking them into electric lines and causing outages.
In the small Addison County town of Goshen, wind gusts were expected to top 50 or 60 miles per hour, or possibly even 70 miles per hour in isolated cases.
The utility Green Mountain Power said because it anticipated problems, it brought in extra crews from Massachusetts, Maine, Quebec, and New Brunswick.
However, the company said those line workers faced treacherous conditions in both Goshen and another location near Middlebury College when the wind just wouldn’t quit.
“We had to pull crews out because conditions got so dangerous with flying debris and trees coming down,” GMP spokeswoman Kristin Kelly said. “Crews can only do repairs if it's safe to do that.”
The company said midday Monday that the potential for the worst wind damage was in parts of Bennington, Rutland, and Addison Counties, especially in western-facing slopeside communities.
