Pyeongchang v. Boston: A Look at The Weather Systems

Since the 2018 Olympic Winter Games started yesterday in Pyeongchang, I thought it would be fun to compare our climates and geography.

Winter in Pyeongchang are drier than the summers (our wettest months tend to be in the fall and spring). It's difficult to find average snowfall amounts, but the Korea Meteorological Administration does keep track of the average number of "snowy days." In Pyeongchang, nearly half the days of February have snow. In Boston, February is the second snowiest month on average at 10.9". Over the course of a year, Boston averages 43.76" of precipitation. Pyeongchang averages a staggering 74.72" of precipitation.

When it comes to cold, Pyeongchang is a bit colder than Boston. Let’s look at Boston for the month of February – the average high temperature is 39 degrees and average low is 24 degrees. In Pyeongchang, the average high is 31 degrees and the average low is 13 degrees.

The tallest mountain in Korea is Hallasan - a volcano off the coast – which has an elevation of 6,398’ . How does that compare to the northeast? Mount Washington has an elevation of 6,289'. Near Pyeongchang, the mountains are between 4,000 and 5,000 feet – very similar to the presidential range in New Hampshire.

As far as some snow? It looks like the Olympic city WILL receive some snow over the next 24 hours.
