Some Communities Issue Water Restrictions Due to Dry Weather

After spring weather that brought average rainfall to much of Southern New England, the weather pattern has turned dry lately. So dry in fact that some cities and towns have implemented water restrictions.

Fitchburg is one of several communities in north central Massachusetts now facing restrictions.

That stems from below-average stream flows along the Nashua River. Non-essential watering is prohibited from 9 AM to 5 PM during the restrictions, with fines possible for violators.

It would take a week of more normal stream flows to lift the restrictions, and right now that seems unlikely in the near future.

Even with the restrictions in place, officials say the water supply is overall in good shape thanks to the normal rainfall earlier in the year.
