March is off to a very cold start across New England, with temperatures running 5 degrees below average so far in Boston. This cold air is finally almost ready to depart. Almost being the keyword.

After a mixture of sun and clouds today, with a few snow showers, skies will clear out again tonight. Temperatures will once more drop into the single digits and teens, making it another cold morning on Friday.

By Friday afternoon, however, it’s not quite as chilly as past days. Highs will pop into the 30s. That’s still below average, but at least it’s closer to normal.

A weak system will dive to our south Friday night into the pre-dawn hours of Saturday. That may bring a few extra clouds, or perhaps a flurry to areas in far southern New England, but not much more than that.

Behind that, we’ll enjoy lots of sun on Saturday. That’s the clear pick of the weekend as highs will make it to around 40 in many spots. We’ll do some melting, for those looking to get rid of the snow, but we’ll also enjoy fantastic ski conditions. Expect pleasant temperatures and light winds on the slopes, with a very deep snow pack.

Sunday turns more unsettled. A storm will bring a wave of snow to New England during the morning, but that snow will change to a wintry mix and snow from south to north over the course of the day with warmer air arriving. Highs will eventually make it into the 40s.

Accumulations in southern New England will be minimal, with a few inches likely in Northern New England where things stay mostly snow.

Next week starts on a mild note, with more 40s on Monday, before cooling off for the middle of the week. Another warm-up late week, however, will likely boost temperatures back into the 40s or even 50s.
