    Western Massachusetts Marks Tornado Anniversary

Eight years ago, a deadly EF-3 tornado tore across Western Massachusetts.

The twister touched down around Westfield, tracking east through places like West Springfield, Springfield, Monson, Brimfield and Sturbridge. The storm lifted once it arrived in Charlton, some 39 miles away.

Three people were killed by the storm, with more than 200 others injured.

Some homes were completely destroyed, with hundreds others damaged. The damage can still be seen today, both to buildings and the landscape.

Storm winds reached 160 MPH, with the tornado reaching a maximum width of a half mile.

A series of smaller tornadoes, rated EF-1 and EF-0, touched down nearby as well. The tornado ratings go from 0-5, with 5 being the most devastating.

The storm is a reminder that major tornadoes are rare in New England, but not unheard of.

In 2014, an EF-2 tornado touched down in Revere and back in 1953 dozens were killed by the infamous Worcester tornado. Researchers estimate that storm was an F-4 or an F-5.
