Wet and Windy

It’s been a soggy Sunday. Boston received the greatest amount rain in one day since September 30, 2015! For eastern Massachusetts this was a drought “denting” rain. Here is a list of the some the rainfall amounts since midnight Sunday.

We did a Facebook live session this evening and a lot of people asked, “was this from Matthew?” Yes, but indirectly. The center of Matthew passed several hundred miles to our south, however the moisture from the storm was infused into a cold front, which passed through the area. Winds have been gusty.

Now that the cold front has moved through, a strong area of high pressure is moving in. This is creating a tight pressure gradient, which will lead to strong winds through the overnight and into the day on Monday. A wind advisory has been issued for the Cape and Islands — that’s where wind gusts could exceed 50 mph — elsewhere, winds will gust between 30 and 40 mph. Because of the severe drought conditions, trees are stressed and these wind speeds will be strong enough to bring them down. I’m not expecting widespread power outages, but there may be some localized power disruptions.

Temperatures will also be cool to start the week, expect highs in the upper 50s!
