How Schools Decide Exactly When to Close

(NECN) - When the snow falls, school superintendents have an important decision to make: Should they cancel classes for the day, start late, or start on time?

Superintendent of Newton, Massachusetts schools David Fleishman explains how he makes their decisions.

Newton schools are closed all day long. With just under 12,000 students, they're the 8th largest district in Massachusetts. Fleishman made the call to cancel classes at 4:30 a.m.

After talking to the Department of Public Works, who by then had already counted 8-9 inches in Newton, they told him there's no way they could make enough progress to even make it with a 2 hour delay.
