Hurricane Irene Blows Over the Caribbean

(NECN) - Hurricane Irene has strengthened from a Category 2 storm to a major Category 3 hurricane as it heads for the East Coast.

The storm's maximum sustained winds are at 115 mph, and is expected to strengthen in the next day or so.

Officials are already evacuating the islands off of North Carolina as a precaution.

The storm is moving north-northwest near 9 mph, and is currently centered about 335 miles southeast of Nassau in the Bahamas.
