June 1 Tornadoes Resulted in Hundreds of Millions Dollars of Damage

(NECN: Steve Aveson) – Many in Massachusetts will not soon forget June 1, 2011.

Tornadoes claimed the lives of three people and wreaked havoc on the area.

The storm prediction center noted the possibility of severe weather leading up to the tornado, but nothing could fully prepare New Englanders of the coming disaster.

NECN meteorologist Matt Noyes aggressively tracked the coming danger.

Though severe weather is not uncommon in New England, the winds of last year’s tornadoes were extreme.

Winds battered the area with forces up to 160 mph.

Three lives were claimed and several hundred were injured.

The tornadoes were devastating to families and businesses.

The result was one of the most costly tornado events on record.

The state delivered $15 million for emergency response, cleanup and assistance and shelter, and over $200 million in personal and business insurance claims.

There’s still a lot of work to be done, but Steve Aveson tells us you get the impression that the resilient people of Springfield can do almost anything.
