NECN Breaks Down Top Five Earthquakes of All Time

(NECN) - NECN meteorologist Danielle Niles tells us about the top five most damaging earthquakes of all time.

Hundreds of people are already confirmed dead from the tsunami that roared ashore in eastern Japan on Friday, spawned by one of the biggest earthquakes ever recorded.

Danielle says this is the fifth largest earthquake ever recorded in history.

Top five earthquakes in history:

#1: Chile (1960) -- magnitude 9.5
#2: Alaska (1964) -- magnitude 9.2
#3: Sumatra (2004) -- magnitude 9.1
#4: Russia (1952) -- magnitude 9.0
#5: Japan (2011) -- magnitude 8.9
