Rhode Island Governor: Great Concern About Losing Bridge in Coventry

(NECN: Coventry, RI) - Officials are monitoring a bridge over the Pawtuxet River in Coventry, Rhode Island, that is in danger of collapsing, which would threaten homes downstream.

"The bridge is severely compromised. You can see the erosion that's occurred under the support structures. There is great concern right now that we are going to lose that bridge," said Carcieri.

"We've taken the precaution of evacuating the people that may be affected," said Carcieri.

"The water is receding; it's down quite a bit from yesterday, so everybody has their fingers crossed," said Carcieri. "Not a whole lot you can do at this stage."

"It's a little bit of a wait and see, but everybody is on top of it," said Carcieri.

"We're making real progress on 95," said Carcieri. "All of southbound is clear of water. Northbound there is still a small section left (with water)."

"We're hopeful we can get 95 flowing again early this afternoon," said Carcieri.
