Thick Cloud of Smoke Settles Over Northern Vermont

(NECN: Anya Huneke) - As the sun rose over northern Vermont Monday morning so did a thick cloud of smoke.

Rachelle Chevalier was among many confused by what she saw and smelled-- a number of people called the fire department with concerns.

Wildfires burning in central and northern Quebec have sent smoke several hundred miles south- across the border to northern New England.

They were sparked by lightning during a cluster of thunderstorms last week.

Brooke Taber of the National Weather Service spent Memorial Day monitoring satellite images of the smoke migrating into the area...

And watched air quality and visibility decline as the day progressed-- a trend he expects to reverse.
