Tracking the Tropics: Earl Forecast

(NECN) - Meteorologist Matt Noyes is tracking Hurricane Earl which is on its way toward the Cape and islands. Winds are expected to reach 75-100 mph southeast of Nantucket. Satellite images show westerly winds pushing the storm against North Carolina and right up the East Coast, hitting New England on Friday around 6 p.m.

Earl is expected to be a Category 2 storm when it finally reaches Nantucket, and the Cape and the Islands are the only areas expected to withstand hurricane-force winds. Friday night, 3-6 foot storm surges are expected on Cape beaches, with minor to moderate coastal flooding. Big waves and strong rip currents will stretch through the entire Labor Day weekend.
