IAEA sets Iranian nuclear plant inspection date

(NECN/ABC) – Tehran has agreed to an inspection of the newly revealed uranium enrichment facility, with the announcement coming from the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency at a news conference in Tehran. “We agreed that our inspectors will come here on the 25th of October to do the inspection and go to Qom,” Mohamed ElBaradei, director general of the IAEA, said. Iranian cooperation comes just days after international meetings in Geneva were called following the discovery of Iran’s uranium enrichment facility. The site has heightened concern that Tehran is using its civilian nuclear program as a cover for developing weapons. “We are not interested in interminable negotiations. They have to demonstrate, conclusively, that their program is for peaceful purposes,” U.S. Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice said on NBC’s Meet The Press. But Iran’s record of saying one thing and doing another has the international community, and the Obama administration preparing for the worst. The first step: wide ranging sanctions. “There are those that we might pursue multi-laterally in the United Nations security council, there are others we could do outside of the security council with partners in Europe and else where, and there are those we can take by ourselves unilaterally,” Rice said on Meet The Press. Iranian President Ahmadinejad claims the latest discussions with United Nations inspectors leave no ambiguity over Tehran’s nuclear activities. Not so, says the UN Inspection Agency. Outstanding issues include alleged studies on high explosives and a missile delivery system for a nuclear warhead. ABC’s Lara Setrakien reports.
