Authorities believe 3 men went into freezing water of Rangeley Lake on Sunday
Police say a lockdown at Pease Air National Guard Base was caused by someone who reported hearing gunshots but wasn't familiar with what gunshots sound like.
The police chief tells the Portsmouth Herald that a follow-up investigation revealed that the person who reported the gunshots had never heard a gun fired before.
The false alarm led to a brief lockdown on July 2.
Police Chief Michael Bilodeau said Monday there were several other people in the area at the same time that the gunshots were reported and they were "not surprised by any noise" in the area. Police did not find any shell casings outside or in any base buildings.
