Taiwan drenched from Typhoon Parma

(NECN/ETTV) – Typhoon Parma had been downgraded to a storm on Tuesday after drenching northwestern Taiwan, where it caused extensive flooding on Monday and Tuesday. Authorities were working around the clock to evacuate residents to safety in the region. Bridges had collapsed, villages were flooded and emergency officials used inflatable boats to carry villagers to safety in parts of Ilan county. Taiwanese authorities had issued landslide and flash flood warnings for eastern and southern areas in preparation, and evacuated 6,582 residents from vulnerable regions. Parma spared Taiwan its full force on Monday, veering off its southwestern coast, but still brought very heavy rains. Before moving towards Taiwan, Typhoon Parma had caused widespread flooding and landslides in the northern Philippines, killing at least 16 people. Weather forecasters on Tuesday predicted that Typhoon Parma would continue spinning over the northern Philippine Islands, causing heavy rain and strong winds. Lighter rain and weaker winds were expected to extend into Taiwan.
