Government: Businesses must do their part in preventing spread of H1N1 flu

(NECN: Washington) – “H1N1 is more than just a significant health issue. It has the potential to affect every aspect of our lives,” this morning said Commerce Secretary Gary Locke. “A flu outbreak is a very scary prospect,” said Locke. “For this effect to be successful, we need the business community to do its part,” said Locke. www.flu.gov Locke said that businesses need to set the right tone within their companies. If an employee exhibits flu symptoms, they should not come to work, and if an employee is showing symptoms during the work day, the CDC recommends that the employee be sent home. Locke said that it is easy to praise the Puritan work ethics nowadays, but it would better serve the country to use common sense this flu season. Locke is advising businesses to revise sick leave policies this flu season, allowing more flexibility. Locke also asks that businesses no longer require doctor’s sick notes. It is advised that all businesses cross-train their employees in the event of a depleted workforce due to employees sick with the flu. The public is advised to always keep their hands clean by frequently washing their hands and covering their mouths when the cough.
