Man hops on pink treadmill to promote breast cancer awareness

(NECN: Anya Huneke, South Burlington, VT) – October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and because of that, pink is the color of choice for many at the moment, including members of a gym in Vermont, where exercise is paying off in many different ways. 63-year-old Paul Cucinelli makes no secret of his experience with breast cancer. He remembers 2003 vividly: finding a lump, showing it to doctors and thinking it was just a symptom of aging — until tests showed it was much more serious. The Essex, Vermont, man was in the minority among breast cancer patients. Nearly 200,000 women, but only about 1,700 men are expected to be diagnosed with the disease in the U.S. this year. To Cucinelli, though, those numbers meant nothing. He is now happy to share his success story with others. Today, he jumped on a pink treadmill at the Sports and Fitness Edge in South Burlington, alongside two other survivors, all throwing their support behind a fundraising effort for breast cancer research. The new treadmills will be placed at three of the health club’s locations in Greater Burlington, and the manufacturer, Cybex, will donate 10 cents for every mile logged on them during October — Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
