Obama may be ready to drop idea of government-run health insurance

(NECN/ABC) – Lawmakers are continuing to hear from voters as their summer recess has proven no break from the health care controversy. It is not clear if President Obama has won any converts among wavering democrats, but there are signs the White House is ready to compromise. At a town hall in Colorado, Obama suggested the public option he has been calling for might not be in a final bill. Senator Conrad is offering an alternative — public cooperatives not run by the government. The government would give nonprofit co-ops money to get started and co-ops would use their buying power to negotiate for cheaper medical coverage, but proponents say including the public option is the only way to ensure true health reform. ABC’s Diana Alvear reports from Chicago.
