Mass. General Doctor: Lot of Shrapnel Injuries

Dr. Peter Fagenholz described some of 29 Mass. General patients from Boston bombing

(NECN) - Dr. Peter J. Fagenholz of Massachusetts General Hospital spoke in a news conference about that institution's experiences following the bombings that injured many near the finish line of the Boston Marathon Monday.

"There have been 29 patients seen here, total. Eight are in critical condition and many of those are very seriously ill," said Fagenholz.

Fagenholz described the extent of some of the injuries.

"Probably the most common serious injuries are combined lower extremity injuries, 'combined' meaning bone injuries, soft tissue injuries and vascular injuries" said Fagenholz. "We're seeing a lot of shrapnel injuries."
