Police: Laser Pointed at Planes From Newton, Mass.

(NECN: Alysha Palumbo) - Newton, Mass. police have confirmed that the FAA received reports from two pilots that there was a green laser light pointed into their cockpits.

Both incidents happened at around 7 p.m. Tuesday. One flight was an EMBRAER 190 en route to Boston, flying over Providence, R.I. when it was blinded by the light. The other flight was a Boeing B738 that had just departed Boston en route to Atlanta.

The FAA pinpointed the coordinates to Forte Park in Newton. Police responded to the area and didn't find anyone there.

Newton Police also received a call from a man who had been driving down Sumner Street from Gibbs Street at about 5 p.m. and noticed a man who, in his words, "intentionally" shined a green laser pen at him and several other drivers. He described the suspect as a man in his late teens or early 20s, possibly Hispanic, wearing a bright orange winter coat.

Police cannot say for sure whether the incidents are connected, but they are investigating the similarities between them.
