The heat level of the chili at Chili Head ranges from a tenderfoot 1 to a hot head 15 and FYI, if you choose a level 11 or above, owner Paul Bello makes you sign a waiver.
Our smokin' bowl of level 10 was filled with beans and tender chunks of brisket. A basket of fried okra looked like nuggets of gold and were a soothing partner to the fiery chili. We went for the whole shootin' match with a mixed rack of juicy spare ribs and meaty Carolina ribs. No bones about it, the authentic barbecue flavor made our eyes light up and our tummies say howdy, although the gummy beans and potato salad were on the bland side. We barely made a dent in an enormous jerk chicken burrito, packed with grilled veggies, rice, beans, and all the fixin's. while quite enjoyable, there were possibly too many co-mingling flavors.. Just two desserts were offered the night we visited, so we tried both. The chocolate lava cake was standard, but a slice of tender red velvet cake topped with luscious cream cheese frosting was outstanding. A friendly greeting, prompt food delivery, and a couple quick "how ya doings" is the no frills approach to service at Chili Heads. And value is high, with appetizers averaging $7, salads, sandwiches and full plates from $9 to $26 and desserts about $5. For its comfortable, colorful atmosphere and large portions of bona fide barbecue at reasonable prices Chili Head Barbecue Company will take the Gold Plate.
