Smithfield, RI Asked to Change Road Name Linked to KKK

Former resident claims Domin Avenue was named after John Domin, who was a leader in the local Ku Klux Klan

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) - Smithfield officials are being urged to change the name of a local street that reportedly was named after a Ku Klux Klan official who lived in town decades ago.
Town Manager Dennis Finlay is reviewing a request by former resident Roger Schenck to change the name of Domin Avenue. Schenck, who now lives in Hawaii, claims the street was named after John Domin, who was a leader in the local Ku Klux Klan.
Town Council President Michael Flynn told The Providence Journal (http://bit.ly/DfeZ7 ) that the town manager will make a recommendation on whether to change the road's name to the new Town Council that will be elected next month.
The Journal reports the local Ku Klux Klan often met in a field not far from Domin Avenue in the 1920s.
