Tree Falls on Boy in Belmont, Mass.

(NECN: Scot Yount, Belmont, Mass.) - Wind gusts are bringing down trees and cutting power across New England. In Belmont, Massachusetts, a tree hit a young boy, sending him to the hospital with serious injuries.

Connie Coulopoulos/Neighbor: "It is a big, big, big huge branch that fell."

The intensive cleanup well underway-this massive old tree came down just before four pm….the accident happening here on Shaw Avenue in a leafy section of Belmont. An as yet unidentified 9 year old boy who was apparently playing basketball with other children from the neighborhood was pinned under the massive boughs. Firefighters rushed the boy to children's hospital in Boston, his condition is has not been released.

Connie Coulopoulos/Neighbor: "I was sitting there reading and I just heard this crack which was heard right down to the end of the street. Really Loud? Yeah. And what did you see? I saw the tree just come right down very gracefully."

Neighbors said it had been extremely windy just before the tree split litterly in two. Belmont police and fire released few details. Neighbors said the little boy was new in the neighborhood and was one of several kids playing in the area when the tree came down.

Connie Coulopoulos/Neighbor: "The whole neighborhood is up in arms because we're a very close neighborhood."

Why the tree came down is still being determined, but police on the scene said it appeared to have some rotten areas inside. Ed Kazanjian lives across the street.

Ed Kazanjian/Neighbor: "The town usually does a great job with the trees they have a contract with a tree company once in a while you will see a little sign up where they have found a disease and they are treating it."

By dark town workers had nearly removed the tree…as people waited for word on the little boy.

Ed Kazanjian/Neighbor: "This isn't about a tree, a little kid got hurt and that's the bad part."
