Wrong-way Driver on Mass. Pike Kills 66-year-old NJ Woman

Three-vehicle accident forced officials to close the highway for several hours Sunday morning

(NECN: Scot Yount, Charlton, Mass.) - The crash closed the Mass. Pike Westbound for a number of hours for a three-car accident that happened on the West Street overpass in Auburn, Mass.

A toll collector alerted police they'd seen a driver entering the highway going the wrong way.

State Police rushed to close the highway, but the wrong-way driver still managed to cause a three-car crash, which killed a 66-year-old woman from New Jersey.

"One vehicle was overturned and on fire, and there were two other vehicles involved, upon arrival of the crews they encountered one vehicle overturned fully involved in fire, another vehicle with someone heavily entrapped," said Captain Eric Otterson of the Auburn Fire Department.

Rescue crews from the Auburn Fire Department worked for an hour to free the trapped driver.

"A total of three patients were transported, the driver of one vehicle who was heavily entrapped, and also two other patients of the third vehicle that was involved," said Otterson.
