A teenager has drowned in a river in Groton, Massachusetts, authorities said Wednesday.
Police and fire crews responded to Squannacook River after a 17-year-old male went underwater around 3:15 p.m. and did not resurface, the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office said shortly before 8 p.m.
The teenager was pulled from the water around 4:30 p.m. and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The victim and four friends are believed to have been jumping in and out of the water using a rope swing, authorities said, noting that the water level and current were high due to the recent rainfall.
