Maine State Police investigate gruesome mystery

(NECN: Amy Sinclair, Gorham, Maine) – Maine State Police are awaiting autopsy results to help them solve a gruesome mystery. They’re trying to identify two bodies that were discovered this morning in a burning car in Gorham, Maine. An off duty firefighter driving down route 237 in Gorham was the first to spot trouble. A plume of black smoke rising from behind the brickyard quarry just before 5 am. Brian: “The firefighter who called it in was able to get shot on his phone and it was fully involved at that time.” When Gorham firefighters knocked back the fire, they made a gruesome discovery inside the SUV. Brian: “We have two victims in there given the conditions of the vehicle and victims we have no identities, can’t even have a description of the car.” State Police say both bodies were burned beyond recognition providing no immediate clues about what happened between the two people in the moments before the fire started. The intensity of the heat also destroyed the vehicles license plates, slowing down that part of the investigation. With little to go on at the scene, State Police transported the SUV with the victims still inside to the crime lab in Augusta where forensics experts and the medical examiner can provide some answers. Chris: “The bodies will be removed. We’ll work on identification of them. ID the car through VIN numbers. Hopefully in a short order of time we’ll know who the car belongs to and backtrack from there.” They hope those details will help them determined what happened just before dawn in this gravel pit that left two people dead.
