Families Seek News on Mainers Aboard Cargo Ship

Several New Englanders were on the El Faro cargo ship and many of their families are now rushing to Florida hoping for news about their loved ones.

The father of a crewman on the cargo ship missing near the Bahamas after the arrival of Hurricane Joaquin says several of those on board are from Maine.

Officials say the 735-foot El Faro was en route to San Juan, Puerto Rico, from Jacksonville, Florida, with 33 people aboard. They said they received notification that the ship had lost propulsion and was listing at 15 degrees after taking on water.

Karl Meklin told the Portland Press Herald he and his wife were heading to Jacksonville, Florida, Saturday morning to be closer to the search. Meklin could not immediately be reached by The Associated Press.
