Driver Killed When Speeding Car Crashes Into Building

A passenger was also injured

A 35-year-old East Boston man was killed after the vehicle he was driving hit a sign post and then a building in Chelsea early Monday morning.

According to investigators, the crash occurred around 1 a.m. when a 2001 GMC sport utility vehicle driving at a high rate of speed on 4th Street hit a sign post at the corner of Cherry Street and then collided with the exterior of a building.

The operator and his passenger were both transported to Massachusetts General Hospital. The driver died of his injuries. The passenger, a 47-year-old East Boston man, remains hospitalized.

The crash is under investigation by the Chelsea Police Department and troopers assigned to the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit.
