Duxbury, Mass. Beach Cleared After Possible Shark Sighting

Officials say it was a false alarm

Another reported shark sighting off the coast in Duxbury, Massachusetts, prompted authorities to clear the beach briefly Thursday afternoon, just three days after a great white shark was spotted nearby.

The beach reopened to visitors at 5:30 p.m., after officials determined the sighting was mostly likely of a sunfish.

The beach had been cleared earlier after one beachgoer reported seeing a shark, according to the harbormaster.

On Monday, swimmers had to evacuate the water at the beach after a great white shark was spotted about 75 to 100 yards off the coast. Massachusetts State Police took video of the shark from the air, saying it measured about 12 to 14 feet.

On Wednesday, a reported shark sighting cleared Sunrise Beach in Marshfield nearby, but it was later determined that the animal was also a sunfish, not a shark.
