A family returning from a camping trip was among eight people hospitalized after a major two-car highway crash Saturday afternoon in Mansfield, Massachusetts.
Police say just before 3 p.m., a 53-year-old Plainville woman driving a Lexus RX lost control of her SUV, first veering right into the breakdown lane, then driving back onto the road, hitting a Nissan Armada carrying two adults and five children.
The driver of the Lexus, its only occupant, and a 44-year-old Dudley woman who was in the Nissan were seriously injured and airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital. The rest of the Nissan's occupants, a 42-year-old man and the five children, were transported by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries, state police said Saturday night.
None of the injuries are considered life-threatening, police said.
All northbound lanes were closed for about 45 minutes for the helicopter to land. Shortly after 5 p.m., all of the lanes had reopened.
No charges have been filed. Police continue to investigate the crash.
