One person is dead after their vehicle crashed into a tree and was engulfed in flames, Yarmouth, Massachusetts, police confirm.

The single-car accident happened on Route 6A in Yarmouthport around 11 Wednesday night.

A male driver crossed the center line and crashed into a tree. The car then burst into flames, with the flames reaching 40 feet in the air.

A nearby resident and a passerby pulled the driver out of the burning car about 20 feet from the vehicle, but had to retreat due to the intensity of the flames.

When police arrived they attempted to pull the man further away from the car, but could not due to the flames as well.

Fire officials arrived on scene and pulled the man away. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man has been identified as William Kimball, 54, of Yarmouthport.

Police say there is no evidence the Kimball ever tried to stop.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
