Officials: Missing Swimmer Treaded Water for 2 Hours

Police say 58-year-old Randall Hackett and his son-in-law, 28-year-old Alexander Auerbach, began swimming around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday

It was a harrowing experience for two swimmers whom authorities say were caught in rip currents and fog.

Two experienced swimmers who went missing in Ipswich, Massachusetts, are recovering Wednesday morning and officials say one of them treaded water for more than two hours.

Police say 58-year-old Randall Hackett and his son-in-law, 28-year-old Alexander Auerbach, began swimming around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and were reported missing around 7 p.m.

Auerbach managed to return to shore on his own and didn't need any medical treatment, but a search was launched for Hackett.

State police, environmental police and the Coast Guard joined in the search, and a Coast Guard helicopter eventually found him treading water about a quarter-mile from shore.

Police say the experienced swimmers were dealing with rip currents and fog.

Both men are expected to be alright.
