Police Investigating Attempted Murder, Home Invasion With Axe

Assault took place in Orleans, Mass. on Monday afternoon

A Cape Cod man is being held without bail after allegedly chasing four people with an axe, striking one of them multiple times.

“He was going after whoever he could get,” said Susan Finn.

Finn was one of the four people attacked inside her Orleans, Massachusetts, home on Pond Road Monday afternoon when the intruder broke in.

The suspect, Jamie Hempel, was armed with an axe and two knives, according to the victims.

“All of a sudden the door gets kicked in, he comes in with the ax way over his head, slams it down on my shoulder,” said Finn.

Finn was treated at a local hospital for wounds to her arm, shoulder and leg. Finn’s boyfriend Kevin Eldredge was there as well.

“The next thing I know, I saw him running across the floor with an axe in his hand, raised over his head, swinging it wildly at Susan, Susan was bleeding,” recalls Eldredge.

Hempel allegedly had been holding his ex-girlfriend, a woman necn is not identifying, against her will inside a garage in Eastham over the weekend.

“I was held at the shop, he didn’t let me leave,” the woman told a judge Tuesday. “I got cut with a knife and he choked me.

But she managed to escape and took shelter with Finn when Hempel tracked her down and allegedly went on the wild rampage Monday afternoon.

“I was there yesterday when he kicked the door down at my friend’s home,” said the woman. “I thought he was killing them, I ran out the side door, I was terrified for their life, for my life.”

Eldredge says he and another man inside the home were able to subdue Hempel and snatch the weapons away.

“I jumped on him,” said Eldredge. “Got him on the ground….I took the axe, got it out of his hand, threw it across the floor.”

“When they had him on the ground, I was tempted to give him a few good kicks,” said Finn. “But I’m not going to stoop to his level."
