Suspect Arrested in String of Armed Robberies

Unarmed bank robbery led police to suspect in string of armed robberies

A 24-year-old Worcester, Massachusetts, man was arrested Friday on multiple bank robbery charges after turning himself in at Worcester police headquarters.

Richard Vinton, Jr., of 25 Goldthwaite Road, was charged with unarmed robbery of Commerce Bank, 451 Lincoln St., and five counts of armed robbery.

Police said they responded Thursday afternoon to a report of an unarmed robbery at Commerce Bank, where bank employees said the suspect did not show or mention a weapon. He demanded cash and fled the bank, police said.

The suspect's description matched that of several other recent armed robberies under investigation, officials said.

Worcester detectives identified the suspect and executed a search warrant at Vinton's home Friday. Police said they found evidence linking Vinton to five other area robberies of stores and a gas station.

Vinton is being held on $50,000 cash bail and will be arraigned Jan. 11 at the Worcester County District Courthouse.
