Thousands Heading to Cape Cod for Fourth of July Weekend

About 931,000 Massachusetts residents are expected to hit the road this Fourth of July weekend, AAA estimates.

AAA Northeast is estimated about 0.7 percent more Americans will make a road trip this weekend, making it the most traveled Independence Day weekend since 2007.

Thursday was slow moving all over Massachusetts' highways, and traffic crawled toward Cape Cod, resulting at one point in a six and a half mile backup heading to the Bourne Bridge and a three mile backup to the Sagamore Bridge.

AAA's Mary Maguire says the added cars are partly due to an improving economy and a great forecast for the holiday weekend.

"That's driven by the lowest gasoline prices in five years and by the fact that we are almost a full dollar lower in price at the pump than we were at this time last year, so a Fourth of July getaway becomes a lot more affordable for people," Maguire said.
