Police in Plymouth, Massachusetts, have arrested a woman who is accused of starting a fire in one of the oldest churches in New England
A Massachusetts church that can trace its roots to the Pilgrims has been damaged by a fire police say was arson.
Police say a woman set a fire in the foyer of the First Parish Church in Plymouth at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, damaging the carpet and some furnishings. No one was hurt.
Capt. John Rogers says officers arrested Christine Erickson at the scene. She is scheduled to be arraigned Monday on charges including breaking and entering and arson. Rogers said her motive is unclear.
The church said on its Facebook page that the meetinghouse filled with smoke.
The current church building, which features Tiffany stained-glass windows illustrating the story of the Pilgrims, was built in 1899 and is the fifth meetinghouse on the site. The first was built in 1622.
