Meet the heavyweight champ of the produce aisle

(NECN: Katie Daly, Pepperell, Mass.) – Meet the heavyweight champion, of the produce aisle. Carl Hills’ Heirloom Tomato won him first prize as the heaviest tomato at the 25th annual Massachusetts Tomato Festival. He grows about 60 thousand plants on 10 acres at Kimball’s Farm in Pepperell. With all those tomatoes to care for he says this champ didn’t get any special treatment. But the two-pounder is actually on the small size for a winner. Just a few years ago, Hills tipped the scale with a whopping 3 pounder. The average tomato you buy at the grocery store probably weighs about a quarter of a pound that means to that nine of these would equal the weight of the champ. The Hadley’s of Chelmsford frequently buy their tomatoes at the farm stand, but today they made a special trip to check out the winner. “We think its awesome we’re not a bit surprised everything is awesome here. We call this tomato the one two punch because it looks like boxing gloves.” So what’s next for the tomato? He plans to make a salad out of his prize. But doesn’t plan to change his recipe for success.
