Search continues for second suspect in Brookline rape

(NECN: John Moroney, Brookline, Mass.) – One man has been arrested, and the search continues for another in connection with the sexual assault of a woman in Brookline, Massachusetts. Police say it happened right after a woman got out of a taxi in Coolidge Corner Tuesday morning. Brookline Police say they are following up on solid leads to locate the suspect on the run. The other suspect, 25-year-old Jose Arita, is being held on $150,000 cash bail. Arita was arrested at 2 a.m. This morning at his relatives apartment in Brighton. During his court arraignment, Arita sobbed quietly to himself when hearing the charges against him. Police say Arita and another man jumped a woman from behind on Harvard Street in Brookline. They allegedly hit her over the head and dragged her to a red truck. The truck drove to a vacant parking lot where police say the men raped the woman, before eventually releasing her. Police and private surveillance cameras captured video of the red truck. Authorities in Boston connected video of the truck and the suspects’ description to a traffic stop they executed a couple of weeks ago. Today Brookline’s police chief explained how this recent traffic stop led to the arrest of Arita. Brookline police are hoping to arrest the second suspect soon. If Jose Arita makes bail– he must stay away from the 30-year-old female victim– and may be ordered have to wear a GPS tracking device. He is due back in court September 10th.
