Storms down power lines, uproot trees in Mass.

(NECN: Josh Brogadir, Sudbury, Mass.) – It’s quiet several hours after a strong storm came through the town of Sudbury, lifting shingles off roofs, uprooting trees, and knocking down branches over power lines. “As long as it doesn’t fall on the house, I don’t care,” said Vincent Sutera. Even so, Sutera’s weekend did not get off on the right foot – his yard is littered with tree limbs after powerful winds and downpours came through Sudbury about 430pm Friday. “A friend who’s staying here said he saw all the trees twist one way a few times like a pretzel and then everything just came down,” Sutera said. Not far away, a massive maple snapped at its base, coming down on this yard, missing busy Marlboro Road. “It was just like a black cloud. It just got very dark, we knew something was going to happen,” said Greg Babikian. Babikian said strong winds came over the top of his house on Ward Road, sending debris throughout the yard, ripping shingles off his roof, continuing along, uprooting this apple tree before moving on into the woods. And according to Babikian, the trees in his yard were leaning as the powerful gusts passed through. I asked if he saw a funnel cloud. “My wife did. Yeah, cause she could see the debris in the air, so something definitely touched down without a doubt,” Babikian said. “A tree fell down on the car, I was in it, fell down on both sides, couldn’t go forward or back,” said Mark Hubeldank. Farther south down Route 27, also called Maynard Road, a large oak brought down power lines and blocked the street. Utility crews came to investigate and police shut down the road on the edge of Hubeldank’s property. Considering the damage, he took it in stride. “It’s only electrical power out. We have trees that are hanging right over the house, so if one of them had come down and totaled the house, then I’d worry,” Hubeldank said. Chief meteorologist Tim Kelley said there wind gusts over 60 miles per hour, whether there was an actual tornado remains to be seen. There were no reports of any injuries.
