Tragedy strikes family watching storm on Maine's coast

(NECN: Amy Sinclair, Southwest Harbor, Maine) – Tragedy strikes a family watching this weekend’s storm on Maine’s coast. The chief ranger at Acadia National Park says officials did all they could to caution throngs of visitors to keep back from the hurricane-fueled waves but many didn’t heed their warnings. As the tide rose, more than a dozen people were battered by a fierce wave, three were washed to sea and one of them, a 7-year-old girl died. Seven-year-old Clio Dahyun Axilrod died. Her father and a 12-year-old girl were rescued from the water. They were among 20 people watching the surf near Thunder Hole Sunday when a rogue wave struck. Chief ranger Stuart West at Acadia National Park says officials did all that could to caution the thousands of people who came out to watch the waves. West believes they used the correct protocol, and advises anyone coming to the park in the future to give Mother Nature the respect it deserves. CLICK HERE for the entire interview with Stuart West.
