(NECN: Brad Puffer, Mont Vernon, NH) – Authorities are searching for two men wanted in connection with the murder of a mother in Mont Vernon, New Hampshire. Police found the woman’s body early Sunday morning in her home. Her daughter suffered serious injuries. Police continued their investigation Monday into a murder that has shaken this small, rural town of Mont Vernon New Hampshire. A town of only 2,300 residents and the first murder anyone here can remember. John Quinlan, Chair, Board of Selectmen: “I really think the town is in state of shock right now.” Police have not officially identified the victim. But John Quinlan, chairman of the board of selectmen, says he knew Kim Cates very well. John Quinlan, Chair, Board of Selectmen: “You couldn’t ask for a better more outgoing person…”I can’t imagine Kim having an enemy in the world or crossing anybody in any way, so this just doesn’t make any sense.” Police have release little about what happened. A 911 call came in early Sunday morning. When police responded, they found a woman dead and her daughter seriously injured. Police have not said how she died, whether they believe the attack was random or targeted. They have only said they are looking to question two men – one bald with a blue hooded sweatshirt – another shorter. John Quinlan, Chair, Board of Selectmen: “We hope this is successful and they found out what happened at get them because this is just a horrible thing.” Cates’s daughter is now at Children’s Hospital in Boston. Quinlan traveled to Boston to be with her. He says Cates’s husband was out of town on a business trip, but was at his daughter’s side last night. John Quinlan, Chair, Board of Selectmen: “She is going to recover. We were told it was probably going to be a long recovery.” At the Mount Vernon Village school, where Cates daughter is a sixth grader, a statewide exam was cancelled so counselors could help students comprehend the tragic news. Superintendent Mary Jennings: “To let the children know they are safe and their parents are looking out for them and the schools a safe caring place.” And at the end of the dirt road leading to the Cates home, people who did not even know her, stopped by placing flowers and a pumpkin with a simple message. Lisa Pritchard, Lives nearby: “It is very hard to know this is happening to a mother and child it is very upsetting.” A town’s quiet sense of peace and security – suddenly shattered. John Quinlan, Chair, Board of Selectmen: “When something like this happens the feeling of vulnerability increases.”
