Woman in baby cut from womb case held on $2M bail

(NECN: Lauren Collins, Manchester, NH) – A pregnant woman is murdered in Worcester, Massachusetts. Thankfully, the baby is alive and doing well. Meantime, the woman who allegedly kidnapped the baby was charged in New Hampshire today. Julie Corey was arraigned Thursday via video link from the Merrimack County Jail, where New Hampshire Prosecutors Mari Ann Ouellette argued she should stay. She requested “that bail be set at two million dollars cash only.” The 35-year-old is charged as a fugitive from justice. There is a warrant for her arrest in Massachusetts for kidnapping the baby ripped from her murdered mother’s womb sometime late last week. Nobody’s been charged in Darlene Haynes’ murder, though the investigation is still open and very active. Judge Gerard Boyle decided to “follow the recommendation of the counsel for the state of New Hampshire and set bail at $2 million cash only.” He set a review hearing for August 30th, provided Corey is still in New Hampshire and “in the event that (she does) not waive (her) extradition back to the commonwealth of Massachusetts.” Corey was arrested Wednesday afternoon at the Pemi-Bridge House in Plymouth. A shelter work had doubted Corey’s claims that the newborn she showed up was her own — a suspicion magnified when that woman heard reports of Haynes’ murder. At the same time, state health and human services officials had but the Pemi-Bridge House on alert. A supervisor called police when Corey tried to leave, and officers took her in to custody in the parking lot. A man who was with her at the time was questioned and released to family members. The baby, who rescue workers say was well fed, in diapers, and properly dressed, was taken by ambulance here, to Speare Memorial Hospital, just a short distance from the shelter. Hospital spokeswoman Michele Hutchins says “her condition has been good and stable from the moment she got here. And she has been a charming little patient to our ob nurses all day.” The baby has been swaddled and capped as any newborn would be, though she was not expected to stay for long. “It is our understanding that she will be released into the custody of the state of Massachusetts,” said Hutchins, which happened late Thursday afternoon. Massachusetts DCYF officials took the baby to an undisclosed location in the Bay State.
